According to the README: Claude Code, Codex, Hermes and OpenClaw as local agents; Claude.ai and Cowork through a plugin; ChatGPT Work, which it says has a Skills beta; and consumer ChatGPT in a limited mode. Its table also has a Medialyst column.
External costs
The repository is MIT-licensed. The README says you can create a free Medialyst account to connect for live news search, PR calendar lookup, journalist enrichment and media list research, and that the pr-calendar endpoint is free with a login required to prevent abuse. Your coding agent or model provider may charge for usage.
Permissions
The skills act through your agent with the access you give it. The repository file list includes scripts/; the README does not describe that folder. According to the README, the one-line install downloads and executes a shell script through curl piped into bash, writes a command and managed bundle under ~/.newsjack, and installs skills into detected runtimes. The README also gives a global npm install and a prompt asking an AI to read the remote setup guide and handle installation and credentials. The README says curl-installed Newsjack auto-updates from the latest GitHub Release before each run; NEWSJACK_AUTO_UPDATE=0 disables auto-update. The README describes saved monitoring configuration, scheduled runs and optional Slack delivery, and says press-clip drives Chrome or Edge through Playwright. The README describes Medialyst login or OAuth authorization, creating or opening projects, adding project memory and uploading project files.

What it does

Newsjack is a set of agent skills for public relations work, plus a command-line tool. The README describes plain-Markdown instructions grouped as Detect, Act, Strategize and AI visibility. The README says to invoke skills by name, such as /angle-generator or /fact-check, or describe the task for the agent to select a skill.

The README describes Detect skills for news opportunities, story origins and keyword coverage; Act skills for angles, headlines, holding statements, comments, publication colleagues, media lists and press-clip PDFs; and Strategize skills for PR planning, calendar hooks and newsworthiness. The README describes AI-visibility skills for revising supplied copy and constructing prompt panels, with human gates and limits on ranking or citation promises.

The README says some skills use external news sources, journalist enrichment, media-list research or saved monitoring state. The README's compatibility table distinguishes local agents, chat-app Limited Mode, external connections and unavailable integrations.

Who it is for

Founders, PR agencies and marketers who want an AI agent to help with PR work.

Example tasks

The README describes /newsjack-detector for finding newsjacking opportunities.
The README describes /angle-generator for turning one update into hooks framed for different beats.
The README describes /headline-generator for headlines and pitch subject lines built from a story's raw facts.
The README describes /journalist-fit-check for assessing whether a reporter will care about a pitch.
The README describes /pr-calendar for planning six months of source-backed upcoming hooks.

Getting started

The README gives several routes. For local agents (Claude Code, Codex, Hermes, OpenClaw) on macOS or Linux, it gives a one-line install that pipes the output of curl into bash, and suggests reviewing install.sh first. It also offers a prompt to paste into any AI, and says its guide covers the npm fallback, Windows and credentials. The README also gives npm i -g newsjack@latest to install the CLI by itself. For Claude.ai and Cowork, you add a marketplace from a repository by entering elvisun/newsjack, then install the newsjack@newsjack plugin. ChatGPT Work has a Skills beta. The README has the exact commands.

Limitations

Full use needs an agent that can use skills. The README says newsjack-monitor-setup, coverage-tracker-setup and press-clip require a local agent and are unavailable in Claude.ai, consumer ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Cowork. The README describes consumer ChatGPT as Limited Mode because Skills are unavailable there, and ChatGPT Work Skills as beta. The README's Limited Mode has no saved state, scheduled monitoring or repeat suppression. The README marks some skills as requiring or benefiting from external connections such as the X API or Medialyst API. The README says press-clip drives Chrome or Edge through Playwright, and crisis-holding has a hard legal-counsel gate. The one-line installer is for macOS/Linux; the README points to its guide for Windows and the npm fallback. The repository can change at any time; check its README before you install.

Data practices

According to the README, local-agent operation supports saved state such as voice fingerprints and scheduled monitoring, while chat-app Limited Mode has no saved state between sessions. The README describes Medialyst access for news search, PR calendars, journalist enrichment and media-list research, and also describes adding project memory and uploading project files to Medialyst after login. The README describes optional delivery of finished reports to Slack. The README does not detail the retention or privacy policies for these services. What your agent sends to its model provider depends on that agent and provider.
