Compatibility
According to the README, it works with an AI coding assistant that has persistent, file-based memory across sessions, and it was built for Claude Code's per-project memory folder. The README gives install commands for Claude Code only. It says the rest of the skill, apart from the memory section, is assistant-agnostic.
External costs
The repository is MIT-licensed and states no pricing. The README says no API keys or external services are needed. Your coding agent or model provider may charge for usage.
Permissions
The skill acts through your coding agent with the access you give it. The README gives a project-local installation under .claude/skills/hindsight and a user-level installation under ~/.claude/skills/hindsight for use across projects. The README instructs the skill to leave the session's actual tasks unchanged and write lessons to persistent memory and its indexes. The README names ~/.claude/projects/<project-slug>/memory/ and MEMORY.md as Claude Code's memory layout. The README describes invocation as on-demand.

What it does

Hindsight is a skill for AI coding assistants. The README says it considers a session's tasks, corrections and dead ends and saves durable process lessons as persistent memory. The README describes it as a filter for lessons rather than a journal of completed work.

The README says one trigger starts a pass over the whole session. The README says the skill looks for an upstream fix behind repeated attempts, discards one-off content and reports nothing to record after a clean session. The README says it checks for an existing memory entry before creating a new one and extends an existing entry when appropriate.

The README describes the skill as on-demand and instructs it to leave the session's actual tasks unchanged while writing memory and its indexes. The README points to GUIDE.md for a fuller walkthrough.

Who it is for

People who use an AI coding assistant, such as Claude Code, and want the lessons from their sessions saved as memory.

Example tasks

Get some hindsight on the session you just finished.
Ask what you should improve after a session.
Review today and notate the lessons.
Save what is worth remembering from this session.
Find the single upstream fix behind a chain of repeated attempts.

Getting started

Copy SKILL.md into your assistant's skills folder. For one Claude Code project, the README runs mkdir -p .claude/skills/hindsight and then cp SKILL.md .claude/skills/hindsight/SKILL.md. To install it once for every project, it runs mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/hindsight and then cp SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/hindsight/SKILL.md. Then use a trigger phrase such as Get some hindsight.

Limitations

According to the README, it needs an AI coding assistant with some form of persistent, file-based memory across sessions, and it was built for Claude Code's per-project memory folder. The README says it falls back to a standalone written report when no such memory system is present, and points to GUIDE.md. It says nothing else is required: no API keys, no external services and no dependencies. The README says the skill runs only when you trigger it, and names disable-model-invocation: true in its frontmatter. It says the "In this environment" section of SKILL.md names Claude Code's memory layout, and that you should replace that section if your assistant stores memory somewhere else. The repository can change at any time; check its README before you install.

Data practices

The README says no external services are required and instructs the skill to record lessons in persistent memory and its indexes. The README names Claude Code's file-based memory layout and describes a standalone report fallback when persistent memory is absent. The README does not describe telemetry or provider-side retention. What is sent where depends on your coding agent and model provider.
