Compatibility
According to the README, Codex and Claude Code have bundled plugin installers today, and other hosts need compatible skill loading and local execution. It names Blender 5.2 LTS as the tested version and Bun 1.3.5 or newer. Its example for setting BLENDER_EXECUTABLE uses PowerShell.
External costs
The README calls the plugin free and open source, and the repository is MIT-licensed. It states no other pricing. Your coding agent or model provider may charge for usage, and the README says the plugin used more reported tokens in its comparisons.
Permissions
The skills and the local MCP server act through your coding agent with the access you give it. The README says Blender runs locally to build or inspect saved scenes and describes a local MCP server for inspection, rendering and asset downloads. The README says generated scenes include editable .blend files and Python source, and exported files can be reopened in a fresh Blender process. The README describes texture and HDRI downloads from Poly Haven and browser workflows for Mixamo motion and Pixabay sound effects. The README says the render tool caps resolution, samples and render time. The README tells you to review unfamiliar Blender scripts before running them and points to SECURITY.md.
Usage terms
MIT License, as stated in the repository. See its LICENSE file for the exact terms. The README adds that Poly Haven's assets are CC0 and points to a THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md file for third-party notices.

What it does

Blender Agent Studio is a Blender plugin for Codex and Claude Code. The README says it gives an agent a workflow for planning, building in local Blender and inspecting results before delivery. The README describes specialist skills and a local MCP server for inspection, rendering and asset downloads.

The README lists props, environments, characters, Geometry Nodes, rigging, animation, simulations, camera renders and checks of geometry and exported files as tasks. The README describes CC0 texture and HDRI downloads from Poly Haven and browser handoffs for Mixamo motion and Pixabay sound effects. The README says generated scenes include editable .blend files and Python source. The README disclaims affiliation or endorsement by the Blender Foundation or Poly Haven.

The README gives a walnut desk lamp with warm lighting and two rendered angles as an example request. The README says the agent selects relevant modeling, rendering, animation and other steps for the request. The README also describes inspection and refinement of existing .blend files.

Who it is for

People who use Codex or Claude Code and want an agent to build, render or refine Blender models, animations and scenes on their own machine.

Example tasks

Build a walnut desk lamp with warm lighting, render it from two angles, and save the .blend and Python source.
Export a game asset as a GLB and check that it imports correctly.
Inspect or refine an existing .blend file.
Render a scene through its own cameras and lighting.
Download CC0 textures or HDRIs from Poly Haven for a scene.

Getting started

The README says you need Codex or Claude Code with plugin support, Bun and Blender. For Codex, it runs codex plugin marketplace add ifBars/blender-agent-studio and then codex plugin add blender-agent-studio@blender-agent-studio. For Claude Code, it runs claude plugin marketplace add ifBars/blender-agent-studio and then claude plugin install blender-agent-studio@blender-agent-studio. Inside a Claude Code session, /plugin marketplace add ifBars/blender-agent-studio and /plugin install blender-agent-studio@blender-agent-studio do the same. Put blender on your PATH or set BLENDER_EXECUTABLE, then start a new Codex task or Claude Code session. The README has the exact commands.

Limitations

According to the README, you need Codex or Claude Code with plugin support, Bun and Blender. It names Blender 5.2 LTS as the tested version and Bun 1.3.5 or newer. It says to put blender on your PATH or set BLENDER_EXECUTABLE to its location. Other hosts need compatible skill loading and local execution. The optional scene-understanding tools need a Rust runtime built with bun run setup:runtime, and the README says the existing tools do not require Rust. The README says its comparisons are limited. Five pairs cannot give a reliable success rate, the gains in visual quality were less consistent, the plugin used more reported tokens, and the press and drawbridge plugin runs took about twice as long. It tells you to review the result yourself, particularly its shape, materials, animation and exported files, and to review unfamiliar Blender scripts before running them. The Pixabay sound effect feature provides a search link and a workflow, and does not return live results or import audio. The repository can change at any time; check its README before you install.

Data practices

The README says Blender runs locally and the MCP server is local. It describes asset downloads from Poly Haven and browser handoffs for Mixamo and Pixabay, and it does not describe telemetry. What is sent where also depends on your coding agent and model provider.
